Frequently Asked Questions

What will the camp be like?

Many participants may be worried that they're not 'fit' enough or in 'good enough' shape for the camp. One must remember that Diabetes Fits is geared to ALL LEVELS OF FITNESS. Each exercise session will include coaching tailored from the beginner to the high-endurance athlete. Most importantly, the primary goal is to learn how to better control blood glucose during and after exercise, not to be the best swimmer, cyclist or runner. These activities are simply there to provide a platform to test glucose management in a controlled setting.

  How much does it cost?

We are very grateful to our sponsors for providing support to cover many of the camp costs. As such, we are able to charge only $50 for this first ever 2-day sports camp.

  What does this cover?

The $50 will cover a light breakfast, morning and afternoon tea and a full lunch. This fee will also help cover the cost of the camp not covered by our generous sponsors.

  What do I get?

Diabetes Fits will provide you with a mesh bag which contains:

  • duotang with lecture notes, articles, map of facilities & pen for notes
  • sponsor samples (such as snack bars, coupons)
  • water

  How do I register?

You can register by mailing the registration package to:

Diabetes Fits, M408
School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health
The University of Western Australia
M408 35 Stirling Highway
Crawley WA 6907

  How can I pay?

A cheque made payable to Diabetes Fits can be posted with your registration form.

  Where do I park?

Free parking on the weekend is available either on the university ground (entrance number 3 and 4 from Parkway) or on the surrounding streets (i.e., Parkway, Everett, Caporn). Please see 'camp location' link for further details and maps.

What do I need to bring?

Items in BOLD are required for participation in training sessions while others are HIGHLY recommended:

  • Swimming: bathing suit, swim cap & goggles
  • Cycling: helmet, bicycle, padded shorts
  • Running: running shoes, comfortable exercise gear
  • General fitness: gym shoes, comfortable exercise gear
  • Towel
  • Casual change of clothes (during lunch/lectures)
  • Rain gear - (but let's hope for sunshine!)
  • Sunshades
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen (minimum SPF 30+ is recommended)
  • Snacks - although we will be providing snacks - please ensure you have your own supply of fast-acting carbohydrates (i.e., glucose tablets, gels) or any other nutrition you are familiar to/use to during your exercise
  • Glucagon pen
  • Identification

What if I don't do sports, but just like to exercise?

Not everyone is into swimming, biking and running. Therefore, during each of the training sessions, we will provide classes in the fitness centre which includes proper technique, circuit and resistance training. Sounds easy? Think again - we'll get your heart pumping!

What if I do not like to/cannot do one of the sports?

If you have an injury or do not like one of the sports, you can always sit in and learn or participate in the general fitness class.

I don't think I'm ready to do the mini try-a-tri - can I just do one of the 3 legs?

Many people may feel the same - we can always form a relay team

Is there a place to store my equipment? Personal items?

Bicycles will be stored indoors in a locked room. Lockers are available in the change rooms.

Is there a place to shower and change?

Of course! Change rooms are located adjacent to the pool and equipped with personal lockers.

  Will meals be provided?

Meals will be provided both days, including a light breakfast, morning and afternoon tea and a full lunch including healthy sandwiches and salads, fruit and more! Water and juices will also be available.
