EXERCISE & CANCER...What you need to know!!
- Staying active after treatment can lower the risk of recurrence and can lead to longer survival
-
Exercise effectively combats many of the side effects of treatment. Including:
- Fatigue
- Nausea & anorexia
- Anaemia
- Depression & Anxiety
- Body composition changes
- Exercise improves general health and reduces the chance of developing co-morbid conditions (ie. heart disease, diabetes etc.)
- Very little risk of harm if professional exercise advice is followed

Researchers from the University of Western Australia & the SolarisCare Foundation are currently investigating the potential effects of exercise or complementary therapy on the possible unwanted side-effects of chemotherapy treatment for NHL and myeloma patients.
The 'Thriving' clinical trial aims to assess the effects of a 12 week aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, or Bowen complementary therapy program on side effects associated with chemotherapy treatment. The aim of this trial is to examine the different rehabilitation methods available to cancer patients, and determine which methods are best for individuals given their ongoing negative side effects. This study will enable the development of rehabilitation recommendations which can be passed on from health professionals to patients helping them to THRIVE after treatment!
Researchers are investigating changes in:
- Muscle strength
- Aerobic fitness
- Body composition (bone mineral density, lean muscle mass, fat mass)
- Quality of life
- Cancer-related fatigue
- Anxiety and depression
- Symptom distress
- Activities of daily living

Potential benefits to participants may include:
Previous rehabilitation intervention studies with cancer patients have shown improvements in:
- Quality of life, anxiety and depression
- Mental &/or physical fatigue
- Maintenance of bone mineral density for those involved in exercise
- Aerobic fitness for those involved in the aerobic fitness group
- Muscle mass & strength for those involved in the resistance training group
Additionally, participants in this study may develop:
- Knowledge of appropriate rehabilitation programs following cancer treatment
- Extensive health testing free of charge
- Fully supervised intervention program free of charge

Between 18 - 65 years of age
Undergoing or due to complete treatment for NHL or myeloma
