Biography:
Dr Peter Whipp is a lecturer in the School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health. Peter co-ordinates the Health and Physical Education domain of the UWA Graduate Diploma in Education. He is the principal supervisor for a diversity of local and international Ph.D, M.Sc and Honours students. He is actively researching 'differentiation' in the HPE setting with the creation, implementation and evaluation of such programmes. In addition, Peter is determining the outcomes and quality of school-based physical activity and PE programmes. He is concerned for the career of HPE teachers and is the chief investigator for a new and innovative mentoring programme sponsored by the DET (WA). Peter is also unpacking the 'enjoyment' construct in HPE, knowledge representation and strategical cognitive processing in elite sporting performers, and researching specialist PE and non-specialist PE teaching philosophy and actions within primary schools.
His external positions as examiner, consultant and writer for the state curriculum committee provide current, relevant and authentic learning resources for his students. This background and a strong belief in an approach to teaching that fosters individual self-worth and respect has been recognised by student, Faculty and University awards including the UWA Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2008 he was awarded the highly prestigious Australian Award for University Teaching - Awards for Teaching Excellence by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) - the national body for learning and teaching in higher education.
