Role of Technical ServicesTechnical Services provide a wide range of services in support of teaching and research. This includes the design, construction and maintenance of mechanical, electronic and computing projects. They also provide cine and video support for teaching and movement based research. Assistance is also provided with collection and verification of data. Consultation on design of equipment for research projects is an integral part of the technical service. Attractions for Applied AreasThe Technical Services structure provides a broad range of skills and equipment infrastructure to give project design assistance to more than 30 research students. Assistance ranges from provision of photographs for theses to creation of custom software for special devices. Recent projects include metabolic measurement systems, force plates, motion analysis systems, and muscle activity monitors. Staff ProfileThe Technical Services workshop currently consists of a chief technician, scientific officer, three electronic technicians, one mechanical technician, pool superintendant and technical assistant. The above have the following qualifications: certificates in mechanical engineering fitting & toolmaking, electrical workers licences, certificates in TV & VCR service, assoc diploma in electronics, bachelor electronic engineering, grad diploma in computing, trade certificate of electronics ProceduresProcedures for access to the Technical Services workshop are as follows. Major projects are referred to the Chief Technician by the relevant supervisor. After assessment (design & costing) the project can be included in the construction program. Smaller jobs or equipment loans are arranged on application to the Chief Technician. Breakdown repairs, safety problems and minor computer problems are attended immediately by the relevant technician. StandardsStaff in the Technical Services workshop are members of the Health and Exercise Science Technical Association (HESTA). Relevant laboratories carry appropriate accreditation from LSAS of the National Sports Research Centre. Staff are involved in assurance of data integrity by calibration and testing against standards.
